Somatic Essentials:
“In order to change our mode of action, we must change the image of ourselves that we carry within us.” – Moshe Feldenkrais
The holiday season is here! The hustle and bustle throughout the holidays can be a stressful time. It is important to take care of yourself during this season as you may or may not be gathering with family or able to engage in holiday celebrations. To emotionally prepare yourself here are some tips for the winter holidays.
Somatic Mind
When your mind can find calm and peace, the external chaos takes a back seat.
• Family Expectations – Most of us will be spending time with our family and loved ones. But some of us will not. It is important to imagine how that time will be devoted. If you can visualize your last Christmas dinner, you can make predictions on realistic expectations of the upcoming meal.
• Write it Down – By writing down your experiences you have a chance to look back and reflect. Insight into knowing what were the “rough” spots can help you better understand your own mental and emotional patterns. By assessing the habitual role or identity you take during this holiday season, you allow space and choice within your mind and psyche, giving you an opportunity to convey thoughts and feelings in a positive manner that benefit you and others.
• Quite Time – With our busy schedules, quite time is rare. Yes, take the time to turn off electronic devices and social media, and enjoy the quietness you need to reset your mind. Following the inhale and exhale breath pattern for 5 complete cycles can be a powerful reset in the presence of chaos.
• Alcohol – Don’t let alcohol ruin your social gathering. Parties can happen back to back, be sure to stay hydrated by alternating a glass of water and then an adult beverage. An added tip…take extra Vitamin B complex, especially Vitamin B12, before your social gathering.
Somatic Body
It is important to feel good to enjoy the holidays, use this tips to keep your body healthy.
• Food – Food is everywhere you turn over the holidays. Try to eat five or six smaller meals throughout the day, instead of one or two large meals. Be cognitive of cravings. No doubt about it, research confirms that sugar begets more sugar. Remember to consume plenty of protein, fruit and vegetables throughout your meals or while snacking of the sugary treats.
• Sleep – Even if you are traveling, be sure to get plenty of rest. Sleeping a few hours on a plane or train ride can help you avoid jet lag. Try to switch your meal times a few days ahead of time to prepare for the time difference when traveling.
• Exercise – A daily exercise routine can have a positive effect on your mood and lessen the stress felt over the holidays. Often holiday gatherings interfere with your regular exercise schedule, so be creative and fit in workouts and activity when you can get them!
Somatic Spirit
The holiday season is the perfect time to reflect upon your blessings and seek out ways to make life better.
• The Passage of Time – Another year is almost complete. It is important to think about your personal growth and knowledge and celebrate the successes you have felt. It is also significant to remember your losses and setbacks. As you take note of your experiences from the current year, envision what this 2017 New Year can mean to you.
• Faith in the Universe – Our world is a beautiful universe. With the day to day challenges, it is easy to forget that. Don’t let the everyday pressures and conversations bring you down. Enjoy time with those you love: friends, family, partners, community and even your pets. Appreciate the good feelings and fortune. Let this energy pull you forward in life and toward achieving your goals.
