Have you ever had the experience of doing all the things you were told should help mobility and comfort, only to find yourself dealing with the same discomfort or limitation again?
Maybe you’ve stretched. You’ve strengthened. You’ve rested. You’ve paid more attention to your posture. Perhaps you’ve had treatment and felt better for a while, but eventually that familiar tightness, ache, or restriction returned.
After a while, it’s easy to start thinking, Maybe this is just the way my body is now.
I understand why people reach that conclusion. When something has been present for a long time, it can begin to feel permanent.
But there’s another possibility worth considering.
Your body may not be out of options. It may simply be relying on the options it knows best.
That distinction is important because the human body is remarkably adaptable. We are learning and responding to our experiences all the time, even when we aren’t consciously aware of it. The way we move today has been influenced by years of habits, injuries, work, stress, recreation, relationships, emotions, and countless other experiences.
Some of those adaptations have served us very well. Others may have become so familiar that we no longer realize there might be another way.
And that is where curiosity becomes interesting.
A Few Things to Keep in Mind
● The way you move today has been shaped by your experiences.
● Familiar movement patterns are not necessarily permanent movement patterns.
● Your nervous system continues learning throughout your life.
● Awareness can help you recognize effort and habits you didn’t know were there.
● Change does not always require working harder. Sometimes it begins with discovering another option.
What Does It Mean to Have More Movement Options?
Think about something you do every day, such as getting out of a chair.
Most likely, you don’t stop to plan how far forward to move your weight, what your feet should do, when your hips should begin to rise, or how your head and eyes participate in the movement.
You simply stand up.
Your nervous system has organized all of that for you.
Now imagine that at some point you hurt your knee. Without giving it much thought, you might begin putting more weight through the other leg when you stand. That’s a useful solution. Your body has found a way to protect you and keep you moving.
Months later, your knee may be fine, but you may still stand using the same strategy.
At that point, the question isn’t necessarily whether you’re standing “correctly” or “incorrectly.”
I’m much more interested in whether your body still knows it has choices.
Can you shift your weight differently?
Can both feet participate?
Can you stand with less effort?
Can the movement feel smoother?
Those questions change the conversation. Instead of deciding that a movement pattern needs to be fixed, we can begin exploring what else might be possible.
Why Do We Keep Using the Same Patterns?
Because familiar is powerful.
Our nervous system is continually receiving information from inside and outside the body. It is paying attention to pressure, balance, muscle activity, joint position, vision, breathing, and much more. From all of that information, it organizes a response.
And it tends to become very efficient at repeating responses it already knows.
That is one reason habits can feel so automatic. We don’t wake up every morning and consciously decide how to walk across the room. Our nervous system draws from what it has learned before.
This is incredibly helpful. Imagine having to relearn how to take a step every time you stood up.
But efficiency can have another side. Sometimes the strategy that became familiar under one set of circumstances continues long after those circumstances have changed.
An old injury is an easy example, but it doesn’t take an injury to develop a pattern. We adapt to the work we do, the activities we repeat, the way we sit, the shoes we wear, the sports we play, and even the ways we respond when we’re tired or stressed.
None of this means your body has done something wrong.
Quite the opposite. Your body has been adapting.
The question is whether the adaptation that once helped you is still the only choice available.
What Does Awareness Have to Do With Movement?
This is where awareness becomes important.
When I use the word awareness, I don’t mean analyzing every movement you make or constantly monitoring your posture. I certainly don’t mean judging your body.
Awareness is much simpler.
It’s noticing.
You might notice that one shoulder lifts before the other when you reach overhead. You might discover that you hold your breath when you get up from the floor. Maybe you realize that you always shift onto the same leg while standing.
The interesting part isn’t the observation itself. It’s what becomes possible once you’ve noticed it.
If you aren’t aware that you’re holding your breath, you don’t have much choice about it. Once you notice, you can become curious.
What happens if I breathe?
If you always shift your weight to the right without knowing it, that pattern is simply what you do.
Once you feel it, however, you can explore.
What happens on the left?
This is one reason I don’t think of awareness as a correction. Nothing has to be declared wrong before we explore another possibility.
Awareness gives us information, and information gives us choices.
Does Change Always Have to Feel Like Hard Work?
We’re accustomed to thinking that physical change requires effort.
If something is weak, strengthen it.
If something is tight, stretch it.
If something isn’t improving, do more.
There are certainly times when strengthening and stretching are appropriate. But more effort isn’t the only way a body learns.
Sometimes the most useful change is surprisingly small.
A person may notice that turning their head becomes easier when their eyes are allowed to participate. Someone else may discover that walking feels different when they stop trying to hold themselves in what they believe is “good posture.” Another person may realize how much effort they’ve been using to perform a movement that doesn’t actually require it.
Those discoveries can seem almost too simple.
But simple doesn’t mean insignificant.
When the nervous system receives different information, it has something new to work with. A small experience can introduce an option that wasn’t part of the previous pattern.
That doesn’t mean one small movement solves every problem. Human beings are much more complex than that.
It does mean we shouldn’t underestimate what can happen when we give the body an opportunity to experience itself differently.
Where Do Somatic Education and Physical Therapy Fit?
People sometimes want to know which approach is the right one.
Should I be doing Physical Therapy? Somatic Education? Total Motion Release? Fascial Counterstain? What about Integral Human Gait Theory?
I don’t think the most useful place to begin is by choosing a technique.
I begin with the person.
What are you experiencing? What are you trying to do? Where does movement feel easy? Where does it feel effortful? What happens elsewhere in your body when you perform the movement that’s bothering you?
Different approaches give us different ways to explore those questions.
Physical Therapy can help us evaluate function and understand physical limitations. Somatic Education brings attention to how movement is sensed and organized from within. Total Motion Release offers another way to explore how movement in one area may influence another. Fascial Counterstain approaches the body through its fascial and nervous system relationships. Integral Human Gait Theory considers the coordinated, whole-body organization involved in human walking.
I don’t see these as competing ideas.
They are different lenses.
And sometimes looking through a different lens allows us to notice something we couldn’t see before.
What If the Place That Hurts Isn’t the Whole Story?
This is another place where looking at the whole person becomes important.
When something hurts, naturally our attention goes there.
If your shoulder hurts, you think about your shoulder. If your back hurts, you think about your back.
That’s reasonable. Pain is designed to get our attention.
But movement doesn’t happen in isolated pieces.
Try reaching for something on a high shelf and notice what happens. Your shoulder moves, certainly, but so does your shoulder blade. Your ribs participate. Your spine responds. Your weight shifts. Your eyes orient toward the object. Your breathing may change.
Your whole self organizes around the task.
This is why I am interested not only in where someone feels discomfort but also in how that person moves.
What else is participating?
What isn’t participating?
Where is there unnecessary effort?
Where might another option exist?
Looking beyond the painful area doesn’t mean ignoring pain. It means recognizing that the body functions as an interconnected whole.
Sometimes that wider view changes what we notice.
What Might You Notice in Your Own Movement?
You don’t need to turn every daily activity into an exercise.
In fact, I’d encourage you not to.
Instead, sometime today, choose one ordinary movement.
Stand up from a chair.
Reach into a cabinet.
Turn to look behind you.
Walk from one room to another.
Don’t try to improve the movement. Just notice it.
Where do you begin?
What parts of you participate?
Are you holding your breath?
Is there effort somewhere you didn’t expect?
Then do the same movement again, perhaps a little more slowly.
Not because slower is inherently better, but because slowing down can make it easier to notice information that usually passes by too quickly.
You may not discover anything dramatic.
That’s okay.
Awareness isn’t a performance, and there isn’t a correct answer you’re supposed to find.
You’re simply getting to know how you move.
Your Body Is Still Learning
One of the ideas I return to again and again in my work is possibility.
When you’ve experienced discomfort for a long time, possibility can become difficult to imagine. Your world may gradually become organized around the things you can’t do, shouldn’t do, or are afraid will hurt.
I don’t think we should dismiss those experiences or pretend that every limitation disappears if we simply think differently.
But I also don’t think we should assume that today’s pattern is the only pattern available tomorrow.
Your nervous system is still receiving information.
Your body is still adapting.
You are still learning.
Sometimes change begins not with pushing farther, stretching harder, or trying to make the body behave differently.
Sometimes it begins with a quieter question:
What else is possible?

Can long-standing movement habits really change?
Movement patterns can change because the nervous system continues learning throughout life. How quickly that happens and what change is possible will be different for every person. The first step is often becoming aware of the pattern that is already there.
How is Somatic Education different from exercise?
Traditional exercise commonly focuses on goals such as strength, endurance, mobility, or flexibility. Somatic Education focuses on the experience of movement itself. By paying attention to how movement is organized and sensed, a person can explore different ways of moving rather than simply repeating a movement more often.
Why does Montgomery Somatics use several different approaches?
People don’t all arrive with the same histories, needs, or goals. Physical Therapy, Somatic Education, Total Motion Release, Fascial Counterstain, and Integral Human Gait Theory provide different ways of understanding and exploring movement. The approach is selected for the person rather than expecting the person to fit a particular technique.
What if I’ve already tried several treatments?
Trying several approaches without getting the change you hoped for can be frustrating. Looking at how the whole body organizes movement may reveal relationships or patterns that haven’t been part of the conversation before. That doesn’t guarantee a particular outcome, but it can provide a different place from which to begin.
