How many of your clients want to keep up with their grandchildren but can’t because of mobility issues? The pain that these clients feel is not only physical but also emotional and spiritual. Part of the joy of grandparenting is playing with the little ones, and when pain and limited function prevent that, the feeling can be devastating.
As movement professionals, it is our goal to help clients like these regain their ability and enjoyment in movement—but we sometimes our usual methods fall short. Perhaps you have tried to put them on a ball or helped them with basic strength training and the results were not as positive as you thought they would be.
At that point, it’s time to try a new approach. If you want to learn something new to help your clients with mobility issues improve function, this is for you.
Transform Walking with Sitting
This coming week, I will be giving two talks about how you can help your clients improve their walking function while sitting. While most people know that the sitting position is excellent for strength training and stretching, many don’t realize that it can transform walking from painful to pleasant.
During my talks, I will introduce you to somatic movement patterns that you can use to help your patients evolve the process and function of walking while in the sitting position.
Who Needs to Hear about This?
While anyone can benefit from hearing my talks, I have prepared with a few people in mind. If you fall into one of these categories, you are my target audience:
- Physical Therapists
- Occupational Therapists
- Feldenkrais and other somatic practitioners
- Yoga, Pilates, and Movement Teachers
- Personal Trainers
- Anyone who helps others improve movement function
If you want to learn more about how to help your clients with mobility issues, please join me.
In each of my talks, we will explore how whole-body integration allows the nervous system to free itself to choose healthy gait patterns. We will also compare and contrast your definition of midline to your brain’s interpretation of your midline. Furthermore, we will also experience three somatic movement interventions, targeting the pelvic girdle, the spine, and the shoulder girdle to positively impact the kinematic gaits and improve function. Finally, we will self-examine while performing four assessment tasks that demonstrate how the nervous system interprets the availability and quality of spontaneous weight shift and the organic change in one’s COM—Center of Mass—that is needed while walking.
